| Understanding Initial Quality | Each year, J.D. Power and Associate conduct its Initial Quality Study (IQS), an industry wide examination of quality during the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. This year, more that 63,000 new-vehicle owners responded to the comprehensive survey, which evaluates quality in eight major categories. Problems, or "things gone wrong," are measures with a problems-pre-100-vehicles (PP100) designation. For 2006, the industry average of 124 PP100 indicates that the average new vehicle have 1.24 problems, or 124 problems for every 100 new vehicles. A lower PP100 score indicates a higher level of initial quality. | |
Tucson receives Award for Initial QualityIn only its second year of production, the Hyundai Tucson achieves the No. 1 ranking in initial quality among 21 competitors in the highly competitive Compact Multi-Activity Vehicle (MAV) segment. Tucson outperforms the segment average by 23 percent. In addition, Tucson outperforms this average in six of eight categories that comprise the study. | In terms of initial quality, all-new models face more challenges than refreshed or carryover models. All-new models typically are manufactured using new processes and tools, feature new components from new suppliers, and are assembled by a workforce that is often new or inexperience's. Any one, or all, of these factors can result in below-average initial quality. The all-new, full-size Azera sedan, however, has experienced a successful launch with high levels of initial quality and ranks second in the large car segment. Elantra Ranks Second in SegmentAnother strong performer in initial quality is the Elantra which is available in either sedan or hatchback versions. The Elantra exceeds the compact car segment average by 19 percent. As such, Elantra ranks No. 2 among the 17 competitors in this popular segment. Contributing to Elantra's high ranking are better-than-segment-average scores in nearly all categories.

Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout StudySM (APEAL) identifies the features that consumers find most appealing about their new vehicles. The study takes into account factors such as design, content, layout, and performance. Owners evaluate more than 100 vehicle attributes in 10 categories. Based on survey responses, each model receives an APEAL index score where the maximum possible score in 1,000 points. The 2006 APEAL Study is based on responses from more than 63,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2006 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. |
